India’s growing stature in the global tourism landscape was prominently highlighted at the 54th Skal Asia Congress held recently in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Dr. Mukesh Batra, Padma Shri awardee and President of Skal International South Mumbai, was honoured with two esteemed awards, reinforcing India’s leadership in sustainable and transformative tourism.
Themed “Unity, Leadership, and Transformational Tourism,” the Congress welcomed over 275 delegates from 19 countries. Distinguished attendees included Skal International President Denise Scrafton, Skal Asia President Keethi Jayaweera, Skal Colombo President Ahintha Amarasinghe, Congress Chairperson Sharmili Vaz, and Skal India National President Sanjeev Mehra.
Dual Recognition for Skal Mumbai South
Skal International South Mumbai was recognised for its outstanding performance in membership growth and engagement:
- 1st Runner-Up for Highest Membership Growth
- 2nd Runner-Up for Highest Percentage Growth
These accolades reflect the chapter’s consistent efforts to enhance community involvement and expand its network in the tourism sector.
Dr. Mukesh Batra’s Vision for Sustainable Tourism
Dr. Batra, while receiving the awards, expressed deep gratitude toward the Skal community. “It’s a privilege to accept these honours on behalf of the Mumbai South chapter. Our commitment to ethical tourism, sustainability, and inclusive growth continues to drive our progress. These recognitions are a testament to our collective efforts,” he said.
He also extended a warm invitation to international delegates to attend the upcoming Skal India National Congress 2025, which will be hosted in Mumbai by the South Mumbai chapter.
India’s Strong Representation at the Congress
India made a significant impact at the event, with more than 120 delegates from 13 Skal clubs attending. While various Indian chapters received recognition, Skal Mumbai South stood out with its dual awards, emphasizing its proactive role and leadership within the global tourism community.
India’s Rising Global Appeal in Tourism
India’s tourism sector continues to witness remarkable growth. In 2024 alone, international visitor spending reached $36 billion, highlighting the country’s increasing appeal as a global travel destination. This surge aligns with the global shift towards responsible and resilient tourism, post-pandemic.
The recognition at the Skal Asia Congress further validates India’s progress in aligning tourism initiatives with sustainability and cultural integrity. It positions Mumbai — and India at large — as a dynamic destination offering both tradition and innovation.
Looking Ahead
Skal Mumbai South remains committed to advancing India’s tourism agenda by:
- Fostering international partnerships
- Hosting global tourism forums
- Promoting ethical and sustainable travel practices
As India continues to emerge as a tourism powerhouse, acknowledgments like these amplify the nation’s role in shaping the future of global travel and hospitality.
