Black Friday Sale 2021 and how it works in India

Black Friday is the biggest name of the biggest deals day of the year in the United States. It takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving and frequently lasts until the Monday after, known as Cyber Monday. It’s a periodic retail extravaganza. Every year brands and retailers run special offers, outstanding deals, and discounts on lots of products.

History of Black Friday:

Apparently, the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper first pictured the phrase ‘Black Friday’ back in 1981. The term ‘Black Friday’ refers to the day between Thanksgiving and the Army-Navy game. ln those days, financial accountants wrote their statements with pen and paper, using Red ink to record losses, and Black for earnings.  Today the term takes a more retail context and marks the starting of the holiday shopping season that starts the day after Thanksgiving.

In 2016 E-commerce deals on Black Friday surpassed Store purchases for the first time in history. Black Friday has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States since 2005. Black Friday in 2021 will observe on November 26, the day after Thanksgiving, on November 25. The days denote the starting of the holiday shopping season.

Black Friday in India:

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not something new in the Indian shopping calendar, as Indians often shop big during their own major festivals, Dussehra and Diwali. Over the last decade, western brands have coined the concept of Black Friday in India by offering lucrative discounts. As the deals coincide with the festive season in the country, it provides the perfect opportunity for Indian buyers to get the last-minute shopping done.

Deals on Household accessories:

This year Black Friday sale is hosted by Amazon from 22 November, where the products will be available at up to 95% off. According to Amazon India over 70,000 Indian exporters who are part of Amazon’s global selling program will showcase millions of “Made in India” products to global customers during the annual Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale. The exporters are launching over 52,000 new products across the country, categories including home and kitchen, STEM toys, apparel, health and personal care, jewellery, and beauty on Amazon’s global websites for the forthcoming Black Friday deals.

Abhijit Kamra, Director of Global Trade Amazon India said, “The sale marks the beginning of the global holiday season. Coming right after the festive season in India, it has traditionally been a key growth period for our selling partners and with more and more people relying on E-commerce for products globally, we believe that the 2021 Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale period with help accelerates the exports business for our sellers.”

Offers on Fashion:

Fashion E-commerce brand Myntra has started offering massive discounts indeed before Black Friday arrives, starting the ‘Made for Winter’ collection which offers the hottest styles for the winter season at up to 70% off.

Offers on Beauty Products:

 beauty brand Body Shop India is offering a discount of 50% on products from 27 November to 30 November. Beauty, wellness, and fashion products brand Nykaa paint the Black Friday into Pink hues with it’s special Pink Friday sale which begins on November 26 and will go on till November 30. The brand is offering up to 40% off on products online and at all Nykaa stores at the #BiggestBeautySaleEver.

Experts’ Thought:

For numerous Indian customers, the Black Friday sale is simply one of the dozens of sale events in a year, and the sale Points to how companies are using Black Friday as a ruse to run discounts, experts said. Experts pointed out that such discounting doesn’t build brand fidelity, and harms companies in the long run as consumers become so used to discounts that retailers find it gradually difficult to encourage purchases during non-sale days.
