Nowadays, both mum and dad have to work full time to earn their bread and butter. If you depend on cloth diapers, you have to spend 5 to 10 minutes daily to prepare these diapers. After spending a hectic day in your workplace, you have to prepare yourself to wash these clothes when you reach out to your home. After all, busy mums don’t want to take the load of laundry.

What made you strike this business idea? What inspired you to start this company?

Amrita Bdiapers is my labour of love that came out of my own experience of diapering my 2 boys, now 5 and 10. As my first born was prone to rashes, I was constantly looking for a healthy and sustainable diapering solution that did not break the bank. I was tired of chemicals in disposables and cloth diapers were cumbersome. With all the washing, soaking, dryingthat was needed with cloth diapering, along with other work that comes with a small baby, I was losing my battle with sanity. I wanted the best for my child, but the premium price tags on organic disposables were mocking my frugality. Bdiapers was designed to provide mothers like myself, a rash free, leak proof diapering solution that is healthy, affordable, convenient and as eco-friendly as can be without compromising on its functionality.

When did you start your business?

Amrita The idea of Bdiapers came to me when I was in the US. I was attracted to cloth diapering with the several cute brand available there. Hence when in 2013we moved back to India with my 8-month-old, I launched BumChum Diapers, India’s first and only Modern Cloth Diaper brand. Bumchum grew with help of the e-commerce boom in 2012, however I soon realised that MCDs weren’t as convenient for working moms like myself. I found it hard to commit to cloth diapering completely and found myself deflecting to commercial disposables, initially at night time and going out, and eventually all day. Hence it was in 2019 when my children were olderandfound time to perfect the design of a hybrid diaper that works with disposable or  reusable inserts, and launched Bdiapers.

What does success mean to your company?

Amrita At Bdiapers, we believe in the wisdom of past generations in raising healthy, happy babies. We wish to bring modern conveniences in traditional products that not only improve the health of our babies but also our planet.Success for us is to ensure that everything we communicate is clear and honest. We focus on finesse and ensure everything we create holds up to our standard of quality. Success for us is not only to improve the health of your baby, but also the world we will leave behind for them.

Our philosophy follows the Socrates Test of Three Sieves. The sieve of Truth, The Sieve of Usefulness and the Sieve of Good. This philosophy is infused into our products and is our primary filter on how we evaluate our bottom line.

How are you performing currently?

Amrita We have had a steady growth of loyal customers and currently have 350 since the launch of our webstore in May 2020. We are also present in all major ecommerce platforms such as Firstcry, Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal as well as a chain of maternity stores in Nagaland.

What is the biggest risk to your company?

Amrita We face huge challenges more than risks. A diaper being essential commodity, we need to reach our audience through multiple channels. Since we have a unique offering and are the only ones in the market with a hybrid diaper, we face the uphill task of educating our customers on the use of the product as well as the disadvantages of single use diapers We are building the category as we build our brand and educate customers as we go along.

What are your plans for the funding?

Amrita We are completely self-funded and are growing steadily adding more customers, channel partners and subsequent revenues that we plough back into the business. We are hoping once we have the concept tested for the two value propositions we serve, i.e. leaks and rashes, we would like to seek the help of an institutional partner to guide us for growth and finances.

What is the biggest challenge you faced during your start-up setup?

Amrita Our biggest challenge is to educate moms on the concept of hybrid diapers as well as educate them about how we are different from single use disposable diapers. Our challenge is to build trust for the two issues we are trying to solve with our product, i.e. leaks and rashes, and to convince the commercial diapering mothers to switch to our system. We are still in the learning phase and continue to work on perfecting our range to ensure we are true to our promise of leak proof, rash free protection

What does growth mean to you and your business?

Amrita We seek to be in the consideration set for every mother looking for a healthy, affordable diapering solution in India. Growth for us would mean a happy community of like-minded moms as we look to collectively educated each other on the values of natural, sustainable, healthy and chemical free parenting.

How does your product stand different from others in the market?

Amrita Hybrid Diapers are simply cloth shell covers with disposable or reusable inserts. Bdiapers is a patented design of hybrid diaper that works in a 2-part system with a cloth cover and a waterproof pouch that holds the disposable nappy pad. The cloth part being purely ornamental doesn’t need a wash until soiled. The waterproof pouch that holds the reusable or disposable inserts are leak proof and unlike plastic they do not ‘crack’ over several hundreds of washes. The pouch helps separate the “cloth” from the “diaper” making it as close as possible to a disposable. The disposable inserts are bleach, fragrance and dye free making them hypoallergenic and easy on the baby’s delicate skin. Each and every aspect of the diaper is carefully designed stressing on safety and comfort. We are currently the only brand of Hybrid Diapers in India.

Where are your start-up services spread?

Amrita We currently retail on our website www.bdiapers.in, Amazon, Flipkart, Hopscotch and Firstcry, Snapdeal and 11 other ecommerce stores across India. We are also in 5 maternity stores in Nagaland and are currently working with a large hospital chain to enter their gift stores.

What does it feel to be the founder of your start-up? How does it feel getting up every morning and getting on to work?

Amrita – It feels great! I truly love what I do and wake up very early morning excited to start my day (also to get a head start while my kid’s sleep).I involve myself in every aspect of the business and try to speak with customers as much as I can. Starting a company is no different from raising a newborn and watching him grow, so in essence, I feel the same way I did when I was a first-time mom 10 years back; very excited, very scared clueless and completely in love J

Where do you see your business standing in the next 5 years?

Amrita – We wish to be an established brand of healthy diapering solutions in India and abroad. We are hoping our design of diapers and our innovation will be understood and well-received, and we will be happy if we are able to provide mothers with a new option to diapering between disposables and cloth.
